"Don't let the Zen color your thoughts. Zen & Horseback Riding is the most applicable book about applying the principles of posture, breath and awareness to riding horses that I know of and has a foreword by Sally Swift. Tom makes simple and understandable how to truly have self-carriage on the horse through engagement of the psoas muscles, hyoid muscles and softening of the solar plexus.

"I recently attended a Rider's Seat clinic of his and have to say it was the most life-changing clinic I have ever attended. What struck me was how simple and easy it was to find that ever elusive seat. I had been searching for all these years. And darn it, if I can't possibly tighten my arms and hands or pinch with my legs when engaging my psoas and hyoid muscles! Another amazing thing is when I engaged my psoas and hyoid so did Wizard, my horse, to mirror me. That created lifting of his back into me and engaging his hindquarters to create throughness. Wizard had a grin for sure that day. I could almost hear him say, 'After all these years of my patience and she finally got it!' It is so simple, yet so profound."

Zen and Horseback Riding

...I liked this book so well after being given a copy that I couldn’t wait to purchase six more copies for my friends.

Zen & Horseback Riding - Second Edition by Tom Nagel
Foreword by Sally Swift

Zen and Horseback Riding explains the location, importance and use of the psoas muscles. The psoas muscles are the deep core muscles that link the upper and lower girdles of the body. The psoas muscles are the basis of all efficient body movement and can be used by participants in any athletic activity. They are the "missing link" a rider must learn to use in order to follow the directions of riding instructors and to feel the horse's movement. By mastering the use of these muscles, a rider will be able to maintain self-carriage, both on and off the horse.

The Second Edition of the book contains a foreword by Sally Swift and an additional fourteen pages of new information in the section entitled Riding. This new section contains information about tone, engaging the psoas, arms and hyoid muscles, breathing the "C," bilateral movement and achieving stability and lightness in the saddle.
